jogger.com was long gone by the time we decided to establish our presence on the world wide web but joggernet.com is not a bad alternative and it's nice and easy to remember.

Worth A Look

Application and utility software packages that are used and highly recommended by John. Most are free. Those that aren't are well worth the asking price.

  • FireFox - is an Open Source alternative to Microsoft Internet Explorer. It is faster, much safer, supports tabbed browsing, blocks ads and popups by default, and is highly customisable to suit individual preferences.
  • Thunderbird - is an Open Source alternative to Microsoft Outlook Express (or Outlook). It is much safer from viruses, worms, and other nasty creatures, and is highly customisable to suit individual preferences.
  • FastMail - is a professional mail service. Guest level UserIDs are free. Various paid levels are available up to a maximum of $40 per annum which includes 6GB of mail storage and 2GB of file storage which can also be used to host a web site, such as this one - www.joggernet.com, and mail management for a personal domain, such as joggernet.com.
  • Notetab - is an alternative to the built-in Notepad editor. It knocks the socks off Notepad as a general editor and is particularly useful as an HTML editor. As its name suggests, it supports tabbed editing - multiple files accessed by tabs.
  • Keepass - is a neat and simple solution to the problem of maintaining ever increasing numbers of passwords, account numbers, PIN numbers, registration codes, and the like.
  • Clipomatic - keep all your regular clips on a permanent clipboard. Also caches ad-hoc clips for easy access. Clips can be grouped, saved, and restored. Very useful for (e.g.) HTML editing.
  • Directory Opus - the Rolls Royce of File Manager & Explorer replacements. Very highly recommended if you are prepared to invest time learning its many and varied capabilities.
  • Total Commander - is a powerful file explorer, manager, manipulator. Its list of standard features is far too long to reproduce here. Sample functions are split screen support (side by side views), tab support (multiple directories available by clicking tabs), and directory synchronisation with visual preview and very fine control over the outcome.
  • Second Copy - is quite simply the best there is in the file/directory backup utility market. You create your backup schedule (what, where, when) and thereafter it all happens automatically.
  • BootitNG - is a boot manager, partition manager, image backup/restore manager, and much more. Perfect for maintaining multiple Operating Systems in separate disk partitions with complete safety and security. Ideal for creating full partition backups to DVD, CD or an NTFS partition with sufficient free space. Includes more function than Partition Magic plus Ghost combined at a fraction of the price.
  • Picasa - is a convenient way of mapping and organising all of your digital images. It has powerful built in capabilities for enhancing images (without interfering with your original photos) and resizing for the web or for email.
  • FastStone - an excellent image viewer/manager.
  • Irfanview - an excellent image viewer/manager.
  • Window Clippings - a highly recomended screen/window/area/menu grabber.
  • Giveaway of the Day - as the name suggests - free software. Sometimes features really good software that would normally cost plenty of $$$s. Worth a quick daily check.

  • Major Geeks - for the latest and greatest geekware, including up to date signature files for all of the major antivirus, adware, and spyware packages.
  • OzCableGuy - all you ever need to know about networking and networking products, including Routers, ADSL/Cable modems, and Wireless devices.
  • HTML Reference - Dave Raggett's excellent HTML reference site. Includes basic and advanced HTML tags and a section on basic Cascading Style Sheets (CSS).
  • CSS Reference - for web site developers who value style as well as content.
